Product safety

California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires a warning where a product can expose a person in California to any of a listed set of chemicals above a threshold.

The following 8 pieces contain a PVC film, a PVC-backed panel or plated zinc-alloy hardware, and carry the warning:

WARNING: These products can expose you to chemicals including DEHP, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

The warning appears in three places for every affected item: on its product page, on its line in your bag, and on the checkout summary before you submit. A Proposition 65 warning is a disclosure requirement under California law and is not, by itself, a statement that the product is unsafe when used as intended.

None of the items sold on this site is a toy, and none is intended for use by children under 3 years of age.

• Long shoulder straps — adjustable cross-body and shoulder straps up to 140 cm are supplied with several pieces. A loose loop of that length is a strangulation risk to a small child. Detach or shorten the strap before letting a child carry a bag, and never leave a strap loose in a cot, pram or car seat.
• Drawcords and cord locks — the laundry pouch and several organisers use a braided drawcord with a cord lock. Cords are an entanglement risk and a cord lock is a small part. Keep them away from children under 3.
• Plastic packaging — the bag your order arrives in is not a toy. Keep it away from babies and children and dispose of it promptly.
• Clear film pouch — the transparent liquids pouch is thin film. Keep it away from children under 3.

Every product page states a suggested maximum load in kilograms. It is the weight the handles, seams and base are built to carry repeatedly under normal handling, with a margin.

• Distribute weight evenly. A concentrated load in one corner puts far more stress on a seam than the same weight spread across the base.
• Lift by the handles provided. Lifting a loaded bag by a single external pocket, a zipper pull or a compression strap can tear it.
• Do not overfill past the point where a zipper has to be forced. A forced zipper is the most common cause of failure in a soft bag.
• Shoulder straps and slings carry the same rated load as the bag; a sternum strap or hip belt is for stability, not for extra capacity.

Damage caused by carrying more than the stated load rating is misuse and is not covered by the 12 month warranty. See the refund policy for what is covered.

Where a product page states a water-resistance rating, the exact test that produced it is published beside it. For most pieces that test is: sprayed with 2 litres of water at 20 °C from 30 cm for 3 minutes, closed and held at 45 degrees.

None of our products is waterproof, and none should be described as such. Specifically:

• zippers, seams and base panels are not sealed and are not part of the test;
• the rating covers brief exposure to rain or spray, not immersion, not prolonged heavy rain and not pressure;
• water resistance reduces with age, abrasion and washing; it is a property of a new coating, not a permanent feature;
• electronics, documents and anything else that must stay dry should be inside a separately sealed bag.

• Clean by hand. Sponge with cool water and a small amount of mild soap, then wipe with clean water. Work with the weave, not against it.
• Do not machine wash or tumble dry. Agitation and heat destroy the polyurethane coating and can delaminate a stiffener panel.
• Air dry fully away from direct heat and direct sun, with the bag open, before storing. Storing a damp bag causes odour and mildew.
• Do not iron, bleach or dry clean. Solvents strip the coating.
• Zippers — brush grit out of the teeth rather than forcing the slider. A dry lubricant is fine; oil attracts more grit.
• Store loosely and unloaded. Long storage under compression sets creases into stiffened panels.

Some things are absent from this catalogue on purpose:

• No batteries or power outputs. Nothing we sell contains a battery, offers a USB output or houses a power bank. Lithium cells in baggage carry their own certification and air transport requirements that have nothing to do with how well a bag fits.
• No tracking devices. Nothing we sell contains or is sold with a tracker.
• No antimicrobial or odour-control claims. Our shoe and laundry pouches separate contents. They do not kill anything, and we make no claim that they do.
• No security or protection claims. We do not describe any piece as anti-theft, slash-proof, tamper-proof or crush-proof. A lockable zipper is a convenience, not a security device.
• No screening claims. The transparent pouch is sold on its published dimensions and material. We make no statement about security screening requirements at any airport.

We respond within 1 business day. Where a report indicates a fault affecting a batch, we contact every customer who bought from that batch, publish a notice on this page, and arrange returns at our cost.
